TEPCO discharged into the sea 850 tons of filtered ground water taken from wells around the damaged reactor buildings at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.
The project namely “subdrain plan,” has been touted as one of Tokyo Electric Power Co.’s key measures in tackling the contaminated water problem. Each day, about 300 tons of groundwater still seeps into the basements of the reactor buildings, where it mixes with melted nuclear fuel and becomes highly contaminated.
By pumping up groundwater through wells and discharging it into the sea after treatment, the government and Tokyo Electric Power Co. hope to halve the amount flowing into the reactor buildings.
