Fishermen’s association in Fukushima prefecture gave approval to Tokyo Electric Power Co. to release radioactive groundwater from the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant into the ocean after it undergoes decontamination treatment.
Tepco hopes the measure will curb the amount of toxic water that’s piling up at the complex every day. Local fishermen had long opposed the plan amid concern it would pollute the ocean and contaminate marine life.
In exchange for approving the plan, the prefectural association request that TEPCO and the government to continue to provide compensation to local fishermen, while taking effective measures when the subdrain project causes harmful rumors about their products.
