An out-of-court center for disputes about compensation to victims of the Fukushima nuclear disaster used a lower-than-standard compensation base for those who died during evacuation, it has been learned.
In the case of at least one man, the center did not explain why it recommended a lower compensation amount.
The government-backed Nuclear Damage Claim Dispute Resolution Center is an “alternative dispute resolution” (ADR) organization used by victims of the nuclear crisis to settle their claims for compensation.
According to documents made publically available by the center and from other information gathered by the Mainichi Shimbun, in at least 11 cases the center lowered the compensation amounts by starting from a base amount lower than what is normally used for compensating families of the deceased. While the normal amount to start from is at least 20 million yen, in these 11 cases the center started from between 18 million yen and 14 million yen.
