The Ministry of the Environment announced Sept. 10 that the decontamination work of seven municipalities in Fukushima Prefecture is unlikely to be completed this fiscal year as scheduled. The anger of evacuees who are waiting to return are raising a lot.
Plans were made to finish decontaminating all cities, towns and villages between fiscal 2012 and 2013. However, questions have been raised about the effectiveness of decontamination, and the government failed to find temporary storage areas for contaminated soil, resulting in significant delays.
Decontamination work went according to plan in the city of Tamura, finishing in June, while work in the municipalities of Kawamura, Okuma and Naraha is expected to be completed this fiscal year. However, in the seven municipalities of Iitate, Minamisoma, Kawamata, Namie, Katsurao, Futaba and Tomioka, plans to complete the work this fiscal year will be shifted to next year or beyond.
