» NRA nominees received donations from TEPCO related foundation

Satoru Tanaka, one of the government’s two nominees for the five commissioner posts at the Nuclear Regulation Authority, accepted about ¥600,000 in annual pay from a foundation linked to Tokyo Electric Power Co. over a five-year period through fiscal 2011, foundation sources said Monday.

The University of Tokyo professor screened research aid applications for the Tepco Memorial Foundation from fiscal 2007 to fiscal 2011. Tepco made donations to the foundation until its poorly protected Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant was hit by multiple core meltdowns after the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

When the new nuclear watchdog was set up by the previous government, led by the Democratic Party of Japan, a rule was set to prevent anyone who received at least ¥500,000 in annual remuneration from the same nuclear plant operator over the three preceding years from being appointed as an NRA commissioner, to avoid conflicts of interest.
