Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Toshimitsu Motegi visited Fukushima No. 1 Plant on Aug. 26 to inspect highly radioactive water leaks from a storage tank there.
Following the inspection, Motegi told reporters that he instructed TEPCO to take measures including stepped-up patrols of aboveground tanks, the site of the highly publicized water leakage.
“The major problem lies in that TEPCO failed to manage the tanks properly,” Motegi told reporters.
He also said “The urgency of the situation is very high, from here on the government will take charge.”
At least five of the tanks at the plant on Japan’s northeastern coast have leaked.
