Fukushima city government closed two parking lots for emergency decontamination on May 7th after high concentrations of cesium were found in the soil there by a nonprofit organization called ” The Citizen’s Radioactivity Measuring Station (CRMS). The CRMS was requested to check the level of contamination in these areas by local residents and conducted a survey between April 29-May 2nd.The CRMS measured exposed soil radiation levels at three locations in a parking lot for a municipal library and public hall, and at four locations in a parking lot for a prefectural library and museum and found maximum of 430,000 becquerels per kilogram of radioactive cesium from the soil. It also detected a maximum level of airborne radiation at 3.8 microsieverts per hour, above the benchmark for evacuation, at the two sites.
