» TEPCO seeks the dismissal of lawsuit by US army

Tokyo Electric Power Co sought on June 21st that the dismissal of a lawsuit in which some 50 plaintiffs are seeking damages from Fukushima No.1 plant accident. In a statement submitted on June 21st to a U.S. federal court in San Diego, TEPCO claimed the plaintiffs have not clarified what actually caused damage to their health and the suit should be filed in Japan, where the nuclear accident occurred.

The plaintiffs, including U.S. sailors dispatched to northeastern Japan for the post-disaster relief called “Tomodachi operation”, are seeking damages without fixing the price in the suit filed late last year. They are also demanding TEPCO to set up a fund worth at least $1 billion for medical checks and treatment, arguing they faced risks of cancer and radiation exposure. The original group of plaintiffs sought $110 million in damages when they filed the lawsuit on Dec. 21. But they changed their demands later, while the number of plaintiffs has since grown to include other U.S. military personnel and families.
